The first part of this chapter describes the phenomenon of the Grand Tour as it has hitherto been understood by Czech, Austrian or German historiography - as a journey undertaken by central European aristocrats for the sake of knowledge in order to comlete their education. In the second part, the itineraries and thze programme of a typical Grand Tour taken in the second half of the seventeenth century will be analysed on the basis of a sample of twenty tours.
The shift towards a more northern focus in the itineraries ofthe Central European Grand Tour after 1700 will be analysed in the third and closing section.
