The Status of Sexual Minorities in Russian Federation from its Creation to the Present

Publication at Faculty of Law |
2017

Abstract

The status of sexual minorities has always been a problematic issue in the Russian Federation. For a long time, many rights of sexual minorities have been restricted and their sexual orientation had been regarded as an illness.

Since 2000 their position in the society has been becoming more difficult as restricting laws have come into effect, depriving them to express their orientation and opinions in public and fight for their rights. However, the European Court for Human Rights does not agree that this situation is in compliance with the standards of the Council of Europe.

It is questionable, how its recent decision will influence the Russian politics in this area in close future.
