In her article "Citizenship and Refugee Status", author focuses on the provision of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees which deals with the commitment of the states to facilitate the acquisition of citizenship for refugees. Under the Convention, states do not have the duty to grant citizenship; however, in the current Western debate which emphasises permanence, a transitional refugee status appears undesirable.
The author concludes that the transitional refugee status is quite generous in Western countries, and that a permanent status (citizenship) is unnecessary and difficult to achieve if large numbers of people arrive.
