Current management of bronchial asthma relies primarily on long-term preventative treatment based on the understanding of the underlying inflammatory processes causing the disease. With consistent implementation of current guidelines modern treatment has the potential to achieve control of asthma and provide patients with good quality of life and a favorable prognosis.
Despite the significant successes that asthma control has achieved in recent years, we are still seeing many patients whose disease is not properly controlled. One of the major reasons may be poor adherence to the recommended regimen.
Non-dherence to treatment is one of the well documented risk factors that may worsen outcomes of asthma care and sometimes may even lead to serious conditions or life threatening events. Level of adherence should be constantly monitored in each patient and targeted measures should aim for its improvement.
