Abstract

Older adults with type 1 diabetes are at an elevated risk of severe hypoglycaemia and may have serious comorbid conditions. Problems with cognition, mobility, dexterity, vision, hearing, chronic pain, unpredictable eating and frailty interfere with the ability to follow complex insulin regimens.

For the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus intensive insulin regime is the preferred choice with adequate frequent self-monitoring; we do not hesitate to use insulin analogues. Targets of metabolic compensation are individual, treatment regimens must be modified with the goal of minimizing hypoglycaemia and severe hyperglycaemia and maximizing quality of life.
