Abstract

Smoking significantly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (Dm), aggravates microvascular and macrovascular complications of both type 1 and 2 Dm and increases the risk of premature death. Quitting smoking may be a time of prevention and early detection of diabetes, or more frequent monitoring of diabetes and treatment adjustment: although the risk of developing diabetes is higher during the first months or years of smoking abstinence, and the glycemic control may be impaired, the overall benefits of smoking significantly outweigh these risks.

Without intervention and pharmacotherapy, the success rate of quitting smoking is very low, therefore treatment for tobacco dependence should be a routine part of the care of diabetics.
