We summarise the current knowledge in the field of diagnostics and therapy of glaucoma, we list various practical tips and tricks for clinical practice, with our commentary. We focus especially on tonometry and fluctuations of intraocular pressure, field of view examination, electrophysiology, gonioscopy, ultrasound biomicroscopy, examination techniques of the frontal segment, the influence of the thickness of the centre of the cornea and its biomechanical properties on tonometry, photodocumentation of the papilla of the ocular nerve and retinal neural thread layers, imaging techniques for examining the papilla of the ocular nerve and monitoring of ocular haerodynamics.
There are promising new possibilities for therapy and future new directions - neuroprotection, neuroregeneration, stem cell use and gene therapy. We discuss the level of care available for glaucoma patients in the Czech Republic.
