Scientific representation: Resituating the similarity account

Abstract

Similarity as an account of scientific representation is untenable, as has been shown by various authors. Although similarity is not what grounds the representational relation, the question remains what, if any, role the notion of similarity plays in scientific representation and otherwise.

In this paper I suggest that in some cases similarity is one of a number of factors that takes part in choosing the right representational tool.
