The incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is rising in a general population as well as in the critically ill where a direct relationship to illness severity is observed. Various cohorts demonstrate a link between a supraventricular (SV) arrhythmia and ICU survival however, there is yet uncertainty whether an AF is merely a marker of disease severity or independently contributes to the unfavourable outcome.
The Frog-ICU study addressed the impact of various presentations of AF on short and long-term outcome in 19% of the general ICU patients suffering from an AF. The study demonstrates an association of the new onset AF (NOAF) with increased risk of in-hospital and post-ICU death.
