Lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding

Abstract

Lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) is defined as blood loss distal to the ligament of Treitz. Acute LGIB is defined as having duration shorter than 3 days and it may result in instability of vital signs and anaemia.

Chronic LGIB is a slow blood loss over a period of several days or longer with episodes of melena or enterorrhagia. Occult OGIB is manifested by recurrent iron-deficiency anaemia and/or recurrent positive faecal occult blood test results.

Obscure GIB has been defined as bleeding of unknown origin that persists or recurs after an initial negative endoscopic evaluation.
