Intrauterine contraception in 2013 - current status

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2013

Abstract

The article presents an evidence-based review focusing on the effectiveness and safety of intrauterine contraception in women. Information on the two types of intrauterine devices, the copper-bearing intrauterine device (Cu-IUD) and the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS), are presented.

IUD mechanisms of action and the relation of IUDs to pelvic infection are reviewed. Both types of intrauterine contraceptives offer highly effective and safe methods of contraception.

Recent research demonstrates the non--contraceptive benefits of intrauterine contraception in protecting against endometrial and cervical cancer. Innovations in the field of intrauterine contraception aim to provide both effective contraception and to treat specific gynecological disorders
