Dutch in (eye)movement: sensorimotor reflexion of lexical and grammatical aspect

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the link between the complex system of temporal cues and sensorimotor representation in Dutch speakers, with specific focus on grammatical and lexical aspect and their interplay. There is enough evidence to believe that those two temporal properties events described by the means of verbs are have big influence on the way we conceptualize the world.

Auditory stimuli - sentences manipulated with respect to grammatical and lexical aspect - will be played. Subsequently, participants' eye movements will be measured while looking at set of pictures where different stages of the described events are presented.

One can expect less focused ocular behaviour in the case of imperfective and atelic conditions, as the mental stimulation is more enhanced. In contrary, clear preference for one of the pictures is expected in the case of perfective telic events as supposedly, the perfective verbs constraints mental conceptualisation to the endpoint in English.

However, the ocular behaviour for the telic imperfective and atelic perfective conditions is rather difficult to predict as no similar study addressed this exact topic yet. It is going to be for the first time when such a study will be done on Dutch.
