Antibiotics: systematics, properties, use

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2018

Abstract

The monograph consists of four parts. The introductory part brings the basic concepts and contexts of the antibiotic treatment: definition of antibiotics; an explanation of their exceptional position among other medicinal products; basic terminology used to describe their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties; mechanisms of the development of antibiotic resistance; side effects and drug interactions.

The core part of the book deals with the systematics. The baseline is distinguished by six groups of antibiotics, according to the mechanism of action; this breakdown contains some original features that go beyond established schemes.

The individual formulations always describe the chemical structure, spectrum of action, resistance mechanisms, pharmacokinetic properties, adverse effects, recommended dosages and clinical use. This is accompanied by Comments that show and justify the use of these products beyond registered indications and dosing schedules.

The third part contains general advice on how to lead antibiotic treatment: what type of product to choose; what to do when selecting the dosing regimen; when and how to combine antibiotics; how to stop treatment. The final part of the book is a table summarizing all antibiotics registered in the Czech Republic in 2017.
