Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |

Abstract

Clozapine is the treatment of choice for severely ill patients with schizophrenia who are refracotry to conventional treatment. Up to two thirds of patients in monotherapy with clozapine show a partial or ineffective response.

Clozapine treatment is also associated with significant weight gain and metabolic disturbances. The available data suggested, that aripiprazole augmentation of clozapine may be an effective therapeutic strategy for some schizophrenic patients, leading to improvement of negative and metabolic symptoms.

Combined application of clozapine and aripiprazole is in accordance with a neurobiological rationale and appears to be a safe and well tolerated.
