Bisacodyl is a contact laxative acting in the large intestine where it causes vigorous propulsive intestinal movements through the stimulation of the myenteric nervous plexi. Its dosage form as suppositories is intended for symptomatic treatment of constipation.
It can also be used as part of patient preparation for diagnostic procedures, in preoperative and postoperative care, and in conditions requiring defecation support. Bisacodyl underwent numerous clinical trials and relies on rich clinical experience.
The suppositories are administered rectally once daily. They are also suitable for children older than 10 years.
Without previous physician consultation, the duration of use should not exceed 7 days.
