The project aiming at preserving the Laterna magika multimedia performances raised various challenges related to the very specific nature of the phenomenon, where quite rich but fragmented and mostly uncatalogued pieces of documentation needs to be analysed, annotated and organised. The need for preserving the unique combination of theatre, dance, film projections and music means that archivists, academic researchers, historians and experts in audiovisual and stage technologies should closely collaborate and actively participate in various problem solving tasks regarding terminology, formats, metadata structures, content and intellectual property protection.
As existing physical documents are spread among various memory institutions (National Archive, National Film Archive, Theatre Institute, libraries), everything needs to be digitised, annotated and made accessible using suitable tools and techniques. The final platform would ideally allow us to portray the Laterna magika phenomenon in its complexity and also to foster collaboration in the field of multimedia performance documentation and preservation.
