A new look at the treasuries in the ancient Egyptian fortresses of the Middle Kingdom in Lower Nubia

Abstract

The ancient Egyptian fortresses in Lower Nubia are one of the most impressive buildings from the Middle Kingdom. However the identification of a function of the internal buildings is very complicated, because of lack of conformity in the designs and the lack of excavations.

Most of the sites are now under the water of the Aswan Lake, so the new excavations are impossible. One of the methods how to conduct new research is to compare the fortresses with other fortifications and that not only with ancient Egyptian ones, but also with fortresses from other ancient civilizations.

The comparison with ancient Roman fortifications shows that these fortresses have more in common than expected. Some of those similarities led me to new interpretation of position of the treasuries in the fortresses in Lower Nubia
