Abstract
The article outlines the selected characteristics of structural change in Africa that are critically confronted with the modernization model of development. It emphasizes that the specifi c development of economic structure, hand in hand with demographic and other structural changes, represent key challenges that are often not reflected in the positive narrative of African development constructed on the basis of economic growth.
