Hypertension, kidneys, and surroundings - what we have recently learned from renal denervations

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2018

Abstract

Catheter-based denervation of renal arteries, was in past enthusiastically welcome as a long term solution of hypertension, especially if it was resistant to medication. However, randomized blinded studies have not confirmed this.

Nevertheless, the method has provided us with lot of new data, which will obviously be used in clinical practice. Putative indications have been extended to heart failure and atrial fibrillation or ventricular arrhytmias.

The instruments and technical processes undergo steady improvement in order to ensure as complete sympathetic renal nerves ablation as possible. At the same time, potential long-term side effects are meticulously studied.
