Hipster, Preppy, Girly...About Fashion-related Neologisms and Their Circulation in French and Czech

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2018

Abstract

The globalization, accelerating the language contact, facilitates greatly the circulation of neological expressions in unrelated languages. One of the areas with a significantly higher occurrence of neologisms is that of fashion and style.

New words such as hipster, preppy and girly spread quickly in the Anglo-American culture and also invade the languages that this culture is in contact with, including French and Czech. Since this lexical field has not been studied in a comparative way, we decided to describe certain words related to the style in the two respective languages.

Using a corpus based on our own knowledge of the topic and on the lexis found in the press, we try to describe the occurrence of the lexemes chosen in the two languages and to compare their presence in the different types of documents, their distribution, their nature and their place in French and Czech.
