Abstract
The paper analyses the phenomenon of tradition and searches its anchoring both in historical consciousness and social practice. Theoretical knowledge is measured against the role of tradition in modern sports, especially the Czech ones.
The aim is to point to the potential of sports traditions and search their practical utilization. The text uses methods of philosophical analysis and some instruments of hermeneutics in theoretical part and switch to historical analysis and interpretation of sources from history of the Czech sports in empirical parts.
Results show different forms of how to follow traditions - especially in the case of olympism and Czech running races. Possible benefits of alignment with tradition in the area of motivation, acquisition and commerce were found.
