Abstract

The genus Salvia (sage) contains about 900 species, many of them are used in many parts of the world in traditional medicine for treatment of many illnesses, including memory deficit. Sages contain a large array of bioactive compounds and some of them may enhance cognitive activity and protect against neurodegenerative diseases.

Neuroprotective and procognitive effects were confirmed in in vitro and animal studies, some clinical trials were also performed. In this review, the active constituents in two species belonging to the genus Salvia (S. officinalis and S. miltiorrhiza) are summarized, and their influence on pharmacodynamics pertinent to procognitive activity are discussed.
