The author deals with the prison chaplaincy as a service of religious communities to the public and provides a theoretical introduction to this issue. He defines the concept of religion law and shows that the theme of religion and prison is a fixed part of complex religion law treatises both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
He defines the concept of categorical pastoral care, as well as its part, which is the assistance of religious communities to persons in prisons and similar establishments requesting such assistance, irrespective of their religion. Finally, he describes some peculiarities of categorical pastoral care in prisons and similar establishments in the Czech Republic.
