Abstract
Gestational trophoblastic disease represents a heterogeneous group of benign and also highly malignant disorders with rare incidence in population. Persistent gestational trophoblastic disease/neoplasia can follow any type of pregnancy.
The most common symptom of the disease is vaginal bleeding. The diagnosis is characterized by persisting elevation of hCG.
Early stage disease can be usually cured by single agent chemotherapy. On the contrary, advanced disease requires multimodal therapy, usually multiagent chemotherapy often combined with surgery or radiotherapy.
In the low risk disease group, the overall cure rate attacks 100%. Careful follow up after treatment is necessary because of unpredictable behaviour of the disease.
Also next pregnancy should be thoroughly monitored. In last 20 years all of 69 patients with persistent gestational trophoblastic disease treated at our Trophoblastic Disease Centre were successfully cured.
