Messy Business: Memory and the Manuscript Page in Later Middle Ages

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2018

Abstract

The talk analyzes the relationship between the theory and practice of memory in late Middle Ages, that is, between the techniques and strategies of memorizing (including medieval transformations of the ancient art of memory as well as mnemonic schemes and devices) and its traces on the manuscript page. Providing numerous examples from late medieval manuscripts, particulary those by Crux of Telcz (1434-1504) it attempts to uncover the intricate relationship between mind and writing and to question some of common assumptions.
