Abstract

Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are clinical symptoms of venous thromboembolic events and are serious risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In literature venous thrombosis and its complication are the third most common cardiovascular disorders.

This is the reason why prevention of deep vein thrombosis is important (in acute stage there is risk of pulmonary embolism and in advanced stage postthrombotic syndrome with symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency in lower extremities or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension). Strategy for prevention of deep vein thrombosis depends on risk factors for this disease.

Nonfarmacological management in patients with low risk of disease consists from exercise, early rehabilitation and elastic compression stocking. Current recommendation for pharmacological management is in patients with medium or high risk for the venous thromboembolic events.

The patients with high risk for venous thromboembolic events benefit from combination of nonfarmacological methods in combination with pharmacological management.
