Abstract

Stroke prevention is a complex of measures aim to reduce or eliminate vascular risk factors. Primary prevention prevents vascular disease among persons without apparent cardiovascular disease.

Secondary prevention reduces risk of recurrent stroke. Primary and secondary prevention are focused on modifiable risk factors, it means heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia.

Life style interventions especially include regular physical activity, improvement of diet, control of weight and quit smoking as well. Cardioembolic stroke is indicated for anticoagulant therapy after weighing risks and benefits.

Antiplatelet agents are the medication of choice for the preventing of non cardioembolic stroke (excluding especially cerebral venous thrombosis). Prevention of recurrent hemorrhagic stroke involves strict control of blood pressure and in case of anticoagulant therapy careful monitoring of laboratory tests.
