This monograph represents a modern type of scientific Biblical commentary which is a part of the recently established series Czech Ecumenical Commentary to the Old Testament. In its first section, it offers a general introduction to the character and intention of the biblical book of Genesis, presents the given textual base (Hebrew manuscripts, ancient classical and modern translations), sketches the main issues of the history of research, and characterizes the author's approach and the used methodology.
The main part consists of a new translation, text-critical notes, and a detailed exegetical commentary on the Hebrew text of Genesis 1:1-6:8. At several occasions, the the commentary is interrupted by thematical or methodological excursuses (e. g. on Imago Dei, Dominium terrae, Historical context of Gen 1, Topographical scenario of Gen 2-4, Omniscient God in an anthropomorphic narration, Composition of Gen 5-11 etc.).
These parts provide the reader with a more detailed explanation of some aspects within broader contexts or, in some cases, with general overviews and surveys.. The translation is based on the latest critical edition of the Hebrew Bible (Biblia Hebraica Quinta) and the commentary is written in dialogue with the most recent scholarship (provided by extensive bibliography).
