The pope's Clement VI. agreement to establish university in Prague, which was the idea of the emperor Charles IV., was the most important condition for building the first north from Alps university in Europe. Emperor's request was positively handled in January 1937.
From the contemporary point of view legal foundation of the university is related to the founding charter of Charles IV. from April 7th, 1348. By the Diploma of Eisenach the emperor confirmed same privileges to the teachers and students which were valid in other universities in that time.
Recently, Charles University has 17 faculties and around 48 000 students. Over half of Czech medical doctors have Charles University as their "alma mater".
