Text concentrates on the original signs created by teachers of former "Institutes for the Deaf " to meet the educational and communication needs of their pupils. It monitors how the illustrative and visually motivated signs for food, including fruit and vegetables, reflect their most typical characteristics: the shape and look of the food, the way it is prepared, produced or consumed, the color or the taste.
The old signs are then confronted with the contemporary ones, using rich visual material. Interestingly, food that is consumed seasonally or regularly can motivate the signs describing the relevant calendar units.
Attention is also paid to the verb "to eat" and its various realizations, connected with the food shape, form, or way of eating.
