Abstract
Ischemic strokes represent very serious diseases, with high mortality and consequent permanent disability. Recently, there are evidence-based therapeutic possibilities, which may significantly improve the patients' prognosis, but their effect is dependent on early application (principle of the therapeutic window).
All patients can also profit from the intensive care at specialized stroke units. From these reasons, the diagnostics and treatment of stroke in our country is provided in the national network of highly specialized centers, according to legal notices and professional guidelines.
Fallowing article offers an overview of the acute stroke care principles from the neurologist's point of view, aswell as the summary of the diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations, including the primary and secondary stroke prevention.
