The chapter is a general theoretical introduction to cultural diplomacy. It derives from the study of cultural diplomacies of the states from Euro-Atlantic space, as their activities were defining for the very notion of cultural diplomacy.
It defines other key terms in relation to cultural diplomacy - public diplomacy, soft power, nation branding, propaganda. It also revises Czech as well as international scholarly literature from the field, and deals specifically with the issue of regional variations of cultural diplomacy.
