Chapter 2: Metabolic Bone Diseases and Muscle and Joint Changes in Celiac Disease

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2016

Abstract

The chapter covers metabolic bone diseases (osteopenia, osteoporosis and osteomalacia) and muscle and joint changes associated with celiac disease (CD); the epidemiology of osteopenia and osteoporosis in different forms of CD, as well as the increased risk of fractures. All newly diagnosed CD patients should undergo a biochemical evaluation of bone mineral metabolism (parathormone level, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 level, and total serum calcium/albumin ratio).

The assessment of bone mineral density and evaluation of the risk of fractures should be carried out in adult celiac patients. Regular check-ups are an essential part of proper treatment.

Finally, muscle and joint problems are discussed relative to their connection with CD.
