Fatal hypoglycemia in a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with sulphonylurea derivates

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2012

Abstract

The case report describes a fatal hypoglycemia complicated by bronchopneumonia, renal and cardiac failure in a patient treated with sulphonylurea derivatives. The progressive worsening of consciousness during the hospitalization despite sufficient blood glucose levels may be also linked to a theory of a neuronal death during the reperfusion with glucose and an increase of oxidative stress due to NADPH oxidase activation.
