The common multi-disciplinary artists in Dutch literature makes it worth investigating the relationship between visual art and literature, but literature and the visual arts are two different disciplines. The position of the author or his characters between the two disciplines is difficult to determine, because each discipline has its own characteristics.
To understand the phenomenon of a multi-disciplinary artist, I try on the basis of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty to understand the relationship between the visual arts and literature. With regard to multi-disciplinary artists, the two disciplines have to be analyzed in each other's relationship, each with its specific characteristics.
In that case, the question is what characterizes literature and the visual arts and what is their relationship. According to Maurice Merleau-Ponty is 'Seeing' a phenomenon that the disciplines have in common.
In the following I want to put together Merleau-Ponty's concept of 'Seeing' and then to determine whether it is usable in relationship with multi-disciplinary artists.
