Letter to the Colossians

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty, Catholic Theological Faculty |
2018

Abstract

This commentary to the Letter to the Colossians is published as a part of Český ekumenický komentář k Novému zákonu (Czech Ecumenical Commentary to the New Testament). It is the original work of the author.

Ryšková holds that the letter is pseudoepigrafic and written by a successor of the apostle Paul. It is a letter that is of all later letters nearest to the authentic letters, therefore an extensive introductory study is devoted to the problematic dealing with not only the standard interpretation of the usual explanation about how the letter was written, but also with a detailed analysis of the phenomenon of pseudoepigraphy and the character of the letter as to language, style and theology.

In the commentary itself Ryšková follows the linguistic, literary, historical and theological perspectives. The structure of the commentary follows the chapters and verses of the Letter to the Colossians.

The text is commented more or less according to the verses. In introductions to longer sections the author is explaining the literary structure of the text section given, including the spiritual notes and messages usually formulated in the closing paragraph concerning the given section.

The commentary is supplemented by two excursions about the so-called Pauline School and the domestic orders. The publication contains the usual scientific documentation.
