The symposium was being held to mark the completion of a grant-supported project examining the position of the Czech painter Bohumil Kubišta (1884-1918) from a Central European, European, and global perspective. The project ran from 2016 to 2018 and the team comprised Marie Rakušanová, Mahulena Nešlehová, Françoise Lucbert, Anke Daemgen, Eva Bendová, and András Zwickl.

During the course of project, the research team stumbled upon many methodological problems specifically related to Central European modernism and the manner in which it is covered by local art history on the one hand, and "Western" discourses on the other. These issues, inter alia, were discussed at the symposium.

Invited participants: Petr Wittlich, Lidia GƗuchowska, Steven Mansbach, Eleanor Moseman, Nicholas Sawicki, Markéta Theinhardt, Isabel Wünsche, Richard Gregor.
