The ancient Egyptian civilization lasted for several millennia, during which a number of literary compositions were written dealing with the sky. Naturally, different semantic levels intermingled in these texts, and meanings and interpretations varied.
In the Old Kingdom, these writings were mainly to be found in the Pyramid Texts, and in the Middle Kingdom with the Coffin Texts, whereas in the New Kingdom, that is the period of Tutankhamun, several different texts occur which consider the religious importance of the sky.
