Chemistry has usually bad marks among students. They are complaining about its difficulty and distance from everyday experience.
The aim was to discover why is there the fear of chemistry by many students of one high school in Prague. The students from second to eight grade answered open questions about their attitude towards chemistry during their study.
Their answers were summarised by the grounded theory. 167 students took part in it. Later, 53 of them described on the Lickert's scale if they are worrying to ask the teacher and why, and how their fear had changed with the change of the teacher.
The data suggest that the fear is connected to the teaching style. Students need to feel safety when they have to ask questions.
If teacher wants to prevent fear of chemistry, he /she has to prepare friendly atmosphere in the class, be openminded, patient, and introduce hands-on activities more often.
