The so-called colossal painting "Maximian's dream of his Christian victims" is discussed as an example of popular spectacles of tragedies. At the same time, the painting had a bad luck during his presentation in Prague (1889).
After a successful presentation in Munich, the painting was destroyed in Prague before the opening exhibition by a fire caused by new electric lightning. The study discusses a clue between production of colossal paintings and succesful carier of their authors in general.
