Scalar implicature

Abstract

The article deals with a subtype of a generalized conversational implicature. Scalar implicature concerns the interpretation of sentences including quantifiers.

Sentences with the so-called weaker quantifiers generate/communicate their literal meaning and, at the same time, implicate cancellable inferences added to the literal meaning. In the framework of relevance theory, similar implicatures are considered proposition incrementation.
