Not much research has been done on pupils' perception of their understanding in mathematics, so this article offers a preliminary insight into this topic. It is being repeatedly shown that a vast number of pupils have serious deficiencies in their understanding in mathematics, which are often manifested by so-called mechanical knowledge.
These difficulties can be dealt with more easily individually, so the private supplementary tutoring was chosen as a proper setting. Nineteen pupils of a private supplementary tutoring were given a questionnaire about their tutoring lessons in connection to their understanding in mathematics.
Results have shown that they have various attitudes towards their knowledge and reasons for attending tutoring lessons.
