The article deals with the old Christian terms that could have come to our territory in the pre-Cyrillo-Methodian period via Bavarian or North Italian missions. It will try to consider the age and the provenience of the loanwords on the basis of linguistic and historico-cultural arguments.
Special attention is paid to the word Vánoce which was interpreted as a possible pre-Cyrillo-Methodian borrowing by F.V. Mareš and by several other authors after him.
