Splitting of Sentences in Translation: Consequences of the Illusion of Precision

Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to explore the consequences of splitting of sentences in English-French-Czech translations in the InterCorp parallel corpus (www.korpus.cz/intercorp). We argue that splitting of sentences involves important changes in the target text; firstly, concerning the distribution of the meaning of the source sentence, secondly, causing explicitation of the meaning that is only implicite in the source sentence (Blum-Kulka 1986, Baker 1993, Øverås 1998, etc.).
