Drug--induced mitochondrial dysfunctions are often the cause of side effects, which have a variety of clinical manifestations, especially in metabolically active tissues. Due to mitochondrial toxicity, several drugs have been withdrawn from the market.
With more refined methods, mitochondrial toxic effects can be detected in early stages of development, when the potential drug structure can be modified to eliminate side effects. It is therefore more than necessary to ensure that timely evaluation mitochondrial toxicity is a standard procedure in the drug development.
