Patients with neurological diseases are at higher risk of osteoporosis and fragility fractures compared to agematched controls. This review summarizes the (Poznámka zvýraznění 2235 28.02.2019 0:16:51 prázdné) commonrisk factors and pathophysiologic pathways that play a role in development of osteoporosis and fractures in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
The research in this area has been active over recent years. Osteoporosis related fractures cause increased morbidity and mortality and add to the burden of having MS.
There are currently no guidelines how to best prevent and treat osteoporosis in patients with neurological diseases. The work proposes an algorithm for the screening, prevention and treatment of osteoporo- sis in patients with MS.
