Abstract

Gardenia jasmmoides is an evergreen shrub grown in multiple regions in China. It was used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of many illnesses, such as headaches, insomnia, fever, liver diseases, dysphoria, gonorrhoea, conjunctivitis, and hypertension.

Many studies have confirmed that G. jasminoides possess multiple biological activities, such as antioxidant properties, antiinflammatory, antithrombotic, hypoglycemic, antihypertensive, and hepatoprotective effects. G. jasminoides also affects nervous system, in who studies and animal experiments confirmed its antidepressant, anxiolytic, neuroprotective, and procognitive activity.

These effects should be verified in clinical trials too, which are still almost completely lacking.
