Urethral duplication: A case for careful examination

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2019

Abstract

Urethral duplications are rare and encompass a spectrum of anatomical configurations. Duplications of the urethra are usually but not always recognised in childhood.

Only one in four children will present with a double urinary stream. The Effman classification provides a structured approach to the range of configurations.

The aims of reconstructive surgery are to provide a single continent urethra for functional voiding and sexual function. Preoperative investigations aim to: identify associated anomalies, delineate individual anatomy and ascertain the functional urethra.

The cases presented highlight the rare association of Y-type urethral duplications and megalourethra.
