According to the Heliopolitan cosmogony, the gods Shu and Tefnut emerged from the creator god Atum and were the first divine couple. Based on some religious notions that can be found in the Pyramid Texts, they were also connected to the sun god Re.
This article analyses the Pyramid Text spells where Shu and/or Tefnut are mentioned together with Re, thus uncovering several aspects of such a relationship, mainly the fact that Shu and Tefnut protect the sunrise. Moreover, they appear as dawn rays.
