The article focuses on six functionalist housing estates in Europe built as housing exhibitions of Werkbund on the turn of the 1920s and the 1930s. The history of their building, postwar life, renovation and historic preservation is emphasized.
Former exhibitional estates serve for permanent living today, some of them were damaged during the war. Their architectural and historical significance was appreciated during the second half of 20th century and estates are under monument protection now which brings an interest in renovation of individual buildings.
